The New Website
|
|
It took a while to get it exactly right, but I’m delighted to announce a brand-new look for www.JosephFinder.com, thanks to Joe Rivera and the team at AuthorsOnTheWeb.com for their design expertise. I hope you’ll find the new site easier to navigate, with new pages featuring my international editions.
The new site will be updated regularly, so check back often for new material on POWER PLAY, upcoming appearances, and more. If you get a chance, drop Webmistress Clair an e-mail (info@josephfinder.com) to let us know what you think.

KILLER INSTINCT in Paperback This Month!
|
Sometime around the middle of this month, you’ll start seeing the mass-market edition of KILLER INSTINCT in bookstores, supermarkets, airports and elsewhere.
Publishing a book a year forces me to keep moving, like a shark. KILLER INSTINCT is less than a year old, but I’m deep into plans for promoting POWER PLAY, which comes out in hardcover in August, and I’ve already begun work on the next book –- which it’s too early to say much about, but keep reading for some hints.
Anyway, if you’ve been waiting for the paperback to take a chance on KILLER INSTINCT, your time has come. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it -– and if you do, check out the game we put together that compares the sales wisdom of KILLER INSTINCT (much of it tongue-in-cheek) with the best the real business gurus have to offer.

The POWER PLAY Cover --- And the POWER PLAY Slogan
|
|
Thanks to everyone who submitted slogans for POWER PLAY! It was a tough assignment with the limited information I gave you, but you rose to the challenge. More than 100 of you sent in more than 150 submissions, and the choice was tough.
Some of my favorites were “Corporate headhunting was never like this,” from Paul Marinucci of Medway, MA; “Survival of the fittest. Only worse,” from Dan Wald of Wayne, NJ; “Office retreat: This year, emphasis on workforce reduction,” and “Drop dead teambuilding,” both from Eric Sturms; and the creepy-but-funny “You sure got a purty PowerPoint presentation,” from the author Jennifer Colt. It was so hard to narrow it down that I’m actually going to send a bound manuscript to the runner-up, Jeff Greene of Gresham, OR, for his submission, “Work never killed anyone. Until today.”
But the winner, from Kris Dean of Mechanicsville, VA, is “It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.”
Thanks to everyone who submitted a suggestion -– and, if you sent us a mailing address, look for your POWER PLAY Post-It® notes early next month!
Look above and to the right for the cover of POWER PLAY, in stores on August 21 (yes, that date has changed -– nature of the business). I like the red glow, and you have to look closely to see the image: a hunting lodge in a rifle sight. A picture’s worth a thousand words, they say.

| And For My Next Trick... |
|
Publishers Weekly announced it a couple of weeks ago, so it’s only right that I confirm it here: my wonderful publisher, St. Martin’s, and I have agreed to publish another four books together, starting in the winter of 2009.
What’s especially exciting about this news is that it’s a big shift for me –- the beginning of a new series, to feature a main character who heads a high-powered corporate investigation firm. To date I’ve written only standalones, so the series will be a great new challenge.
In other news, I have a new publisher in the U.K.: Headline will publish POWER PLAY in August, to be followed by at least the next two books. I’m excited to be part of the firm that publishes bestsellers like Janet Evanovich, James Patterson and Martina Cole in the U.K., and I look forward to working with them.

"You're Huge Among the Criminal Element."
|
|
Between tours, it’s nice to get away from my desk once in a while. In the past few weeks, I’ve spoken at conferences in Jacksonville, New York, and Massachusetts, and I’ll be in New York again later this month.
My visit to the Massachusetts Library Association meeting in Sturbridge had not one, but two high points. One was finally getting to meet Nancy Pearl, the “rock star librarian” (www.nancypearl.com) and author of BOOK LUST, MORE BOOK LUST and the just published BOOK CRUSH –- a great, fun lady and an incredibly passionate and articulate reader.
The other great moment was when one of the librarians in the audience came up to me and said, “My patrons love your books.”
I said, “Thank you. Which library do you work in?”
She told me she was the prison librarian at a maximum-security facility in Massachusetts. “They love you,” she said. “You're one of their favorite authors. You're huge among the criminal element.”
Bet Nora Roberts can't say that.
My friend Steve Berry (author of THE ALEXANDRIA LINK and THE THIRD SECRET, among other titles) lured me down to Jacksonville, Florida, for the Much Ado About Books festival, which turned out to be a great time. Plus I got to have dinner with Steve and his wife, Elizabeth, as well as a couple other friends, including Diane Vogt (who brought you THE LITTLE BOOK OF BATHROOM CRIME NOVELS as well as the Judge Wilhelmina Carson series), and Lee Child. The dinner alone was worth the trip to Jacksonville.
I also was invited to appear at an amazing panel at the Edgars® -- my first time at the Edgars, actually –- with Sandra Brown, Barry Eisler, Jeremiah Healy, and Laurie R. King. You'd think by now I'd be tired of being asked whether I do an outline or how I come up with ideas, but it's the opposite: I love listening to the other writers. I really enjoy listening to accomplished, talented writers talk about how they write. I feel as if I learn more at these things than anyone in the audience.
We’re still planning the August tour, a process that’s been slightly complicated by the change in POWER PLAY’s on-sale date. I’ll be several different places between now and then, and if you’ve registered for any of them, be sure to say hello:
