Have You Seen the Trailer?
Trailers: they're not just for movies any more. I couldn't be more pleased with the trailer for BURIED SECRETS, shot and directed by Rufus Hale, edited by Mike Kurthy of Ye Olde Trailer Shoppe. If you're impatient for BURIED SECRETS, check out this preview - and I hope you're even more impatient after you've seen it!

BURIED SECRETS: The First Review

On Sale June 21!
Waiting for the first review of a new book is always a little nerve-wracking, and I admit I feel a little superstitious about it. Sure, it's just one review, but it seems to set the tone for the others to come. Imagine my relief, then, to see a starred review of BURIED SECRETS in the March 15 issue of Library Journal:
"Highly recommended not only for Finder fans but for mystery lovers fascinated with digital surveillance. Crisp, clipped chapters and numerous cliff-hangers propel the action at a breakneck pace. Finder's outstanding writing and engrossing plot twists embellish a captivating summer read."
That star means as much to me now as it did in kindergarten.
Only a couple more months until BURIED SECRETS hits the stores. It's now available for pre-order everywhere, in both print and electronic formats. Order from your favorite independent bookstore, from Amazon or on Kindle, or from Barnes & Noble. We're finalizing tour schedules now, and will announce those dates and places in next month's newsletter.

A Director for KILLER INSTINCT (The Movie)
Film development is a long process, but the adaptation of KILLER INSTINCT took a major leap forward this week with the announcement that Bruce Beresford would be directing the film for Chockstone Pictures and De Fina Productions. Beresford will also work on a revised screenplay with David Murray, who wrote the original screenplay adaptation.
This is thrilling news. Beresford is probably best known as the director of the Academy Award-winning "Driving Miss Daisy," but was also nominated for Oscars for his direction of "Tender Mercies" and "Breaker Morant." He also directed two of my own favorite actors, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, in 1999's "Double Jeopardy."
Read all about it in Variety.

Coming Soon (again) ... THE ZERO HOUR
Thirteen years after its original publication, it's been pretty exciting to see HIGH CRIMES on store shelves again - and even, in some cases, on local bestseller lists. Thanks to everyone who's bought the book, and to those who have sent me photos of the book on shelves in bookstores and airports.
Over the next year or so, St. Martin's will be reissuing all four of the novels that have been out of print. Next on the list: THE ZERO HOUR, coming in mass-market paperback and electronic formats on May 24. THE ZERO HOUR, first published in 1996, features FBI Special Agent Sarah Cahill, who's chasing a charismatic terrorist-for-hire before he can execute an attack on Manhattan. What Sarah doesn't know is that this dangerous man has chosen her - and her eight-year-old son - as his next targets.

Voters Have Spoken: The "Heller's Angels" T-Shirt
Nick Heller's a popular guy. For a fictional character, he has an impressive number of admirers, so we wanted to do something to recognize and reward his fans. I asked a designer to come up with two options for a "Heller's Angels" t-shirt, to be printed in a limited run (only 100 shirts!) and given to Nick's most dedicated fans as part of the BURIED SECRETS release.
What does it mean to be one of Nick's most dedicated fans? We'll have some news on that soon . . . but in the meantime, fans of the Facebook page chose the t-shirt design. Overwhelmingly, fans preferred the vintage baseball design to the more military style. Among the voters, Dana Brown won a drawing to get the first shirt once they've come off the press. Thanks to everyone who voted, and stay tuned for chances to win a shirt of your own!

Where I've Been, Where I'll Be

Details of the BURIED SECRETS tour will be published in the May newsletter. In addition to personal appearances, I'll be doing at least one live chat on Twitter, and we're looking for other ways to reach more readers online. Ideas? Suggestions? Post them to the Facebook fan page, or send them to me directly at joe@josephfinder.com.
It was a thrill to be invited back to Yale, my old college, for a Master's Tea at Branford College last month. The topic was "The Writing Life in the Digital Age," and I was asked to answer the question, "Can a writer make a living anymore if the book is dead, magazines and newspapers are disappearing, nobody's reading, and 'content' is free?" In case you're wondering, my answer - though slightly longer - was "Yes."
One place I know I'll be in June is the Westport Public Library in Westport, CT, on Monday, June 27. I'll be speaking there at 7:30 p.m.; details are online.
July includes two of my favorite events of the year. Thrillerfest is the annual gathering of the International Thriller Writers in New York, July 6-9, and is an invaluable meeting for aspiring authors. Readers are the focus of the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, England, July 21-24. If you're at either, be sure to say hi.
And it's not too early to start thinking about the biggest event of the crime fiction year, Bouchercon, happening this year in St. Louis, September 15-18. Bouchercon brings together almost 2,000 readers, authors, agents and publishers from all over the world, and is the mystery/thriller world's family reunion. You can read about one of my own favorite Bouchercon experiences on the convention blog. Hope to see you there!

Congratulations, and Another Chance to Win

Another month, another chance to win! Congratulations to Laverne Cameron, who won a signed copy of POWER PLAY just for subscribing to the newsletter, and to Patricia O'Reilly, Rahul Shinde, and Johnny Thrash, who knew that Ali Hillman was the CEO's personal assistant (and Jake Landry's ex-girlfriend) in POWER PLAY.
The latest trivia contest continues until the end of April. For a chance at a signed copy of KILLER INSTINCT, answer this question: In HIGH CRIMES, Claire Heller Chapman's husband Tom is arrested for murder and may not be who he says he is. According to the FBI, what is his real name? To enter, submit your answer via the website contact form, under the category "Submit answer to trivia question." Good luck!
